ABSTRACT
Background: Stunting is defined as being short or very short for one’s age, with a height-for-age less than -2 standard deviations (SD) on the WHO growth curve. This irreversible condition results from inadequate nutritional intake and/or recurrent or chronic infections during the first 1000 days of life. Stunted children face inhibited physical and cognitive growth, increased susceptibility to illnesses, difficulty achieving academic success, and a higher likelihood of becoming overweight in adulthood, which increases their risk of developing non-communicable diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, and others. According to the 2022 Nutrition Status Monitoring (PSG) data, the prevalence of stunting in Sleman Regency is 6.88%, while in Seyegan Health Center, it is 7.55%. Stunting is primarily caused by improper infant and young child feeding practices. A lack of understanding among mothers during the child-rearing period is one of the reasons children’s nutritional needs are not met. Therefore, providing education to prevent stunting is crucial. Effective education requires media that is engaging, easy to understand, and accessible to increase community interest and participation in the provided material.
Objective: To determine the effectiveness of using PMBA videos and leaflets in increasing the knowledge and attitudes of mothers with children under 2 years old regarding infant and young child feeding.
Methods: This study is a quasi-experimental design with a pretest-posttest control group. The Wilcoxon test was used to determine the influence of the media, and the Mann-Whitney test was used to assess media effectiveness.
Results: There was an increase in knowledge and attitudes in both the experimental and control groups, with a p-value of 0.000, indicating that both video and leaflet media significantly improved knowledge and attitudes. However, the p-value for knowledge effectiveness was 0.002 and for attitudes was 0.000, which means that education using video media is more effective in increasing the knowledge and attitudes of young women about IYCF compared to using leaflet media
Conclusion: Video media is more effective than leaflet media in improving knowledge and attitudes about infant and young child feeding.
Keywords: stunting, video media, leaflet media, knowledge, attitudes.
