Background: Complications that often arise during the post-anesthesia is a
Postoperative Nausea and Vomiting (PONV). Postoperative nausea and vomiting
occurred in 20%-40% of patients postoperatively. Patient with PONV will
generally pale, sweating, tachycardia, anxiety, depression, pain, dehydration or
active vomiting and tend to have low blood pressure. This causes delay the
transfer of the patient from the room to recover unconscious to the infirmary or
delay the return of the patient, there by extending length of patient care stay. The
length of patient care stay has an impact on the high cost of care.
Objectives: This study aims to determine the difference of PONV incidence in
active smokers and passive smokers with general anesthesia patients at RSUD
Sleman.
Methods: This study was an observational analytic study with this type of cohort
study. Consecutive sampling technique sampling found 44 people composed of 22
people 22 active smokers and passive smokers 22. The test results using Chi-
Square.
Results: Observations were performed on 22 active smokers and 22 passive
smokers. The incidence of PONV in active smokers 18 people (81.8%)
experienced no PONV, while 4 (18.2%) experienced PONV. The incidence of
PONV in passive smokers as many as 12 people (54.5%), as many as 10 people
(45.4%) experienced no PONV. Results chi square test p value of 0.012 less than
0.05 (0.012 <0.05).
Conclusion: There are differences in the incidence of PONV active smokers and
passive smokers in patients with general anesthesia in RSUD Sleman.
